Paint Decontamination

What is it?

Paint decontamination, often referred to as “decon,” is a crucial step in car detailing that goes beyond what a regular wash can achieve. It involves removing contaminants like iron deposits, tar, paint overspray, concrete splatter, and sap that regular washing may not eliminate. One of the primary focus areas of decontamination is iron deposits.

Brake dust, which feels rough to the touch and appears as brown specks, consists of tiny iron particles originating from brake pads. These particles can lodge into the paint and rust, especially in areas like the front bumper, hood, around the wheels, and the rear bumper. Similarly, rail dust, picked up when new vehicles are transported by train, can also cause these specks on the paint.

Why is decontamination necessary?

Contaminants left on the paint can lead to additional debris accumulation, which damages the clear coat over time. A decontaminated surface will appear glossier, as microscopic contaminants won’t block light reflection. Moreover, any protective coating, whether it’s a sealant, coating, or wax, will adhere much better to a clean surface, ensuring its longevity and effectiveness.

There are two primary types of paint decontamination: chemical and mechanical. Chemical decontamination involves using a liquid or paste that dissolves contaminants, making them easier to rinse or wipe off. Specific products can safely dissolve iron particles without damaging the cars paint or clear coat. Mechanical decontamination, on the other hand, uses clay or synthetic alternatives to physically remove contaminants.

Essentially, paint decontamination is a crucial step in maintaining your vehicle’s appearance and ensuring the effectiveness of any protective coatings. Whether a chemical or mechanical method is necessary, proper decontamination can significantly enhance the longevity and quality of your car’s finish.
